SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL FOR CLIMATE: ZERO DEFORESTATION GOAL AND SUPPLY CHAIN CERTIFICATION

This year, once again, the Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil takes part in the Sustainable Development Festival promoted by ASviS (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development), to be held from 28 September to 14 October, hosting an online event on 30 September (3pm – 4.30pm CEST). The aim is to increase knowledge and raise awareness on sustainable development issues, share good practices and stimulate ideas and policies in line with the commitments undertaken at the UN in 2015 with the signing of the 2030 Agenda.

The event “Sustainable palm oil for Climate: Zero Deforestation Goal and Supply Chain Certification”  features in the All4Climate – Italy 2021 programme, launched by the Ministry of Ecological Transition to contribute directly to this September’s Pre-COP meetings in Milan as well as November’s COP26, which focuses on the fight against climate change, with the aim of fostering an active and constructive dialogue to promote the achievement of the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The answers to some crucial questions are sought. Can sustainable palm oil be a solution to the fight against global warming? What are the most effective and coherent options for pursuing the zero deforestation goal?

The event presented the latest studies on the environmental impacts of the palm oil supply chain, the effectiveness of sustainability certification, and that of the zero deforestation and emission reduction policies. The challenge is to satisfy the increase in global demand forecast for palm oil – currently the most highly consumed vegetable oil in the world – by promoting the transition of the supply chain towards more responsible development, production, and consumption models.

The event was moderated by Simone Spetia, journalist and host at Radio 24 – Il Sole 24 Ore.
