EUDR and sustainable palm oil: challenges and opportunities

Also this year the Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil participates in the Sustainable Development Festival promoted by ASviS by organizing three virtual events to help increase knowledge and awareness on sustainable development issues, share and stimulate ideas and policies to help with the 2030 Agenda and promote an active and constructive dialogue on the challenges related to the sustainable development of the palm oil supply chain.The first webinar, took place on Monday 8 May 2023 (11:00-12:00 pm CEST) and was dedicated to an in-depth analysis of the implications of the new EU regulation on zero deforestation (EUDR) for the certified sustainable palm oil supply chain.

The impacts on operators and control bodies, the most recent analyses conducted on the environmental impacts of oil palm expansion, innovative solutions to comply with the new provisions, case studies and best practices, were illustrated and discussed. The point of view of WWF, one of the founding members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), was also presented.

We discussed this with the following experts:

    • Prof. Davide Matteo Pettenella, University of Padua, Department of Territory and Agro-Forestry Systems;
    • Dr. Maria Vincenza Chiriacò, Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change – Cmcc Foundation;
    • Dr. Luca Foresta, Satelligence;
    • Dr. Niels Wielaard, Satelligence;
    • Dr. Eva Alessi, WWF Italy.

The panel was introduced and moderated by the President of the Italian Union for Sustainable Palm Oil, Mauro Fontana.
